The Ramayana by R. K. Narayan
Refusal of the Return
"...I must tell you that it is not customary to admit back into the normal married fold a woman who has resided all alone in a stranger's house. There can be no question of our living together again. I leave you free to go where you please and to choose any place to live in," (162).
In this scenario, Rama's regection of Sita symbolizes his refusal of going back to the old life he had before his banishment. He is weary that there is even a normal life to go back to with Sita. However, when he realizes that Sita is still pure, he accepts that he has completed his task, and that it is time to return to the life he knew before.
