Crossing the Threshold

"While the followers slept, Rama, Sita, and Lakshmana rode out to a farther point on the river, crossed it, and went up the embankment," (58).



The threshold in Rama's journey is the river. The river is the distinction between his kingdom 

(the known world) and the wilderness to which he was banished (the unknown world).
