The Ramayana by R. K. Narayan
Mentors/Helpers
"Viswamithra...taught Rama all the esoteric techniques in weaponry. Thereafter the presiding deities of various weapons, asthras, appeared before Rama submissively and declared, ' Now we are yours; command us night or day,'" (13-14).
This is an example of supernatural aid because Viswamithra teaches Rama everything that he knows, and the asthras offered their service to Rama, therefore acting as his helpers.
"'Rama has never been separated from his brother Lakshmana may he also go with him.' pleaded the King," (10).
"...Kaikeyi came bearing in her arms garments made of tree barks, a reminder for Rama to change quickly and depart. Lakshamana ordered another set for himself, shed the finery he was wearing, and changed into coarse bark," (56).
Throughout the book Lakshmana acts as Rama's sidekick by following him during his journey, and helping protect Rama's wife Sita. Lakshmana is willing to do anything to protect Rama and his good image.
"'Hanuman replied, ''I have not the slightest doubt that this person can vanquish Vali...I can sense his identity. He could be non other than Vishnu himself. When I was young, my father Vayu Bhagavn commanded me,' You shall dedicate your life to the service of Vishnu, ''' (102).
Hanuman is another character that becomes a sidekick to Rama during his battle against Ravana. He vows to serve Vishnu, and so he does, by helping Rama rally and control the armies at his disposal.
